Divided Loyalties: Germans on both sides of the Revolutionary War
This is a partner event. Join San Diego Genealogical Society GIG on June 17 for this much anticipated AMERICA 250 🇺🇲 meeting with military expert Michael Strauss, MA, AG®, AGL™. Explore the diverse German communities comprising Hessians, patriot militia, Loyalists, pacifists, and non-combatants who navigated conflicting allegiances during the American Revolution, revealing complex identities and difficult choices made during the war. The lecture analyzes the motivations that led some Germans to fight for independence. In contrast, others remained loyal to the Crown, refused service on religious grounds, or served as paid auxiliaries of the British Army. This will explore the influence of ethnic identity, property protection, community cohesion, and fear of political instability. Registration.
