As Amish, traditional Mennonite, and Hutterite (Plain) groups in North America are experiencing exponential growth – their numbers are doubling every 20 years – interactions between Plain communities and local and state institutions are increasing. Over the past 20+ years, speaker Mark Louden has served as an interpreter and cultural mediator for Pennsylvania Dutch-speaking Plain people. In this presentation, he will draw on his experience to share examples of how efforts to foster mutual understanding and respect have resulted in successful interactions between Plain communities and non-Plain professionals.
