SUMMARY:Lost in Pennsylvania -Try the Published Pennsylvania Archives
DESCRIPTION:This is a partner event. Speaker: Christine Crawford-Oppenheimer\, MLS. The Pennsylvania Archives is a set of 138 published volumes in 10 series that can be overwhelming to the genealogist who first sees them. However\, searching in these volumes can help you locate information about what an ancestor was doing at a given time\, and where s/he was doing it. If an ancestor surfaces in Western Pennsylvania or Ohio\, information in these volumes may help you to learn where s/he was before that time. Most information in the published Pennsylvania Archives covers from the colonial period through about 1850. This talk will discuss how to access the Pennsylvania Archives and give you a plan of attack to work through them to get the most information. SUMMARY:A Baker's Dozen: Easy Ways to Begin Writing Your Family History
DESCRIPTION:This is a partner event. GGS Annual Meeting with featured speaker Paula Stuart Warren. Anyone can write! Learn ways to get your family history in print without a lot of strain. It’s not as daunting a task as you might think. A baker’s dozen of ways to work on this over time and ideas to get your greater family involved will be shared. You may find that you are already doing some of these but hadn’t realized you were actually getting family history into print! Some of the ideas lend themselves to scrapbooking techniques. Including family health history information is an important part of the process; what you share in print may aid a family member someday. Sharing and preserving family stories\, both the joyous times and the tough times\, can enhance your understanding of yourself and the greater family. Visuals will demonstrate the Baker’s Dozen and a handout will point you to further ideas and help in both print and online formats. German lunch served. Fee. Registration. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | in-person | English

SUMMARY:Introduction to German Genealogy
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Antje Petty\, associate director of the Max Kade Institute for German American Studies. This workshop is intended for genealogists who are new to researching ancestors from German-speaking lands. Register by Nov. 12\, 2025\, to receive a Zoom link. Fee. \n\n\n\nSession I: Where did They Come From? To trace your German-speaking ancestors\, it is essential to know their place of origin in Europe. Many did not come from a unified country called “Germany\,” but instead from Prussia\, Bavaria\, Austria\, Hanover\, Hesse\, Mecklenburg\, or other states\, kingdoms\, and principalities. This session will provide a brief historical overview of the German-speaking regions\, discuss reasons why your ancestors may have emigrated\, and show how an understanding of history can help guide your genealogical research. \n\n\n\nSession II: Traces in America. Before searching for your ancestors in Europe\, you must first establish three key facts about them on this side of the Atlantic: their exact names\, their towns of origin\, and the dates they emigrated or last lived in Europe. In this session\, we will share tips on working with both English- and German-language resources in America\, from census data to the records of German American churches and social clubs. \n\n\n\nSession III: Traces in Europe. Once you know where and when your ancestors lived in Europe\, you can begin exploring European records. This session will introduce the wide range of records available\, suggest strategies for locating them\, and offer guidance on interpreting documents—especially those written in German or in old German script. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | online | English

SUMMARY:About Civil Marriage in Germany in 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:This is a partner event. In Germany\, there are two types of marriage – a civil ceremony performed at the registry office\, and a religious ceremony in the Catholic Church. This system has been in place for over 200 years on the western side of the Rhine River\, as a result of the occupation and annexation by French forces following their revolution. At that time\, it was decreed that a civil ceremony must always precede a religious wedding. On the other side of the Rhine\, the old system remained in place\, whereby Catholics could only marry in the church. Protestants never married in church\, as Martin Luther had declared that marriage was a secular matter. Among Protestants\, the couple entered into a formal contract\, which was then celebrated in church before the congregation. In his presentation on civil marriage in Germany\, Roland Geiger explores this topic in more detail\, using examples to illustrate the content of the contracts and marriage records\, and the information that can be gleaned from them. Registration. \n\n\n\n\n\nPacific time zone | online | English
