SUMMARY:Genealogiebörse – Genealogie zwischen Ems und Weser (Delmenhorst)
\n\n\n\nCET | In Person only | German / English

SUMMARY:Archion: How to Use It and Why
DESCRIPTION:*This is a partner event. Presenter: Barbara Pieh. The website Archion is a source well-worth getting to know. Archion provides access primarily to the records created by the pastors of the German Protestant Churches [Evangelische Kirchen]. They recorded the births/baptisms\, marriages\, and death/burials starting in the mid-1600s. Archion constantly adds new records as they are released by the local churches. The first part of this webinar will show you how to find your way around Archion step-by-step using screen shots.  Even with a good grasp of how to use the website\, however\, the old German handwriting [die deutsche Schrift] remains a challenge. Even Germans say\, I can’t read that! The second part of how to use Archion aims to decrease that intimidation by a closer look at the handwriting itself. It is known by historical types\, such asKurrent\, Offenbacher\, and Sütterlin.  How to read the handwriting will be introduced through a Kurrent alphabet chart and the key genealogicalterms that appear in that handwriting in the records. Other strategies will be pointed out\, such as attention to the column headings of the records\, and the determination of the particular record pattern of the particular parish pastor\, etc. In a third part of the webinar\, the why of all this work is considered. The bottom line is – you will get to know your immigrant(s) better. Register. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | online |English

SUMMARY:German and American Protestant Pastors in Occupied Germany
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Brandon Bloch. Following Germany’s defeat in 1945 and its occupation by the Allied powers\, the German Protestant Church assumed critical social and political roles as both a provider of humanitarian aid and a mediator between the German population and the occupying authorities. This presentation examines the fraught interactions between German Lutheran pastors and their American Protestant counterparts\, as well as U.S.-based faith organizations. SUMMARY:They Returned to the Homeland: Finding Germans from Russia in the U.S. Passport Application Files
DESCRIPTION:This is a partner event. Treffen Tuesday will be presented by Allyn Brosz. For Germans from the Russian Empire\, the transatlantic journey was not always a one-way trip. Some immigrants to the U.S. returned to their ancestral villages as naturalized American citizens\, crossing the Atlantic more than once. Their stories are found in the United States passport application files. This presentation examines the application files\, discussing their availability and offering search techniques. Some of those who traveled and their stories will be highlighted. The odyssey of a Volga German family spanning more than two decades is a case study. Register. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | online | English
