SUMMARY:Schön and Sheyn –The Beautiful Harmony Between German-Russian and Russian Jewish Homesteaders
DESCRIPTION:*This is a partner event. In 1938\, the Andrews Sisters’ Bei mir bist du schön (To Me You’re Beautiful) was a big radio hit. Though many believed it was a German song\, it was a song written in Yiddish\, a language spoken by Eastern European Jews. The record company changed the spelling of the word “beautiful” from Yiddish (sheyn) to German (schön). This anecdote opens the door to examine the similarities\, beyond language\, which laid the foundation for the good relationships between the Germans and the Jews\, living near Odessa at the turn of the 20th Century. Speaker: Rebecca E. Bender\, who with her father Kenneth M. Bender\, are coauthors of Still\, a biography/memoir of five generations of their Jewish family and their communities. Registration. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | online|English

DESCRIPTION:Why is what happened in Augsburg on September 25\, 1555\, one of the most important historical events in German history and of utmost importance to researchers? SUMMARY:Translating German Newspapers – As Easy as Eins\, Zwei\, Drei
DESCRIPTION:Many 19th- and early 20th-century German language newspapers were printed in a Fraktur font. And not only that\, they were written in a foreign language! This combination of an archaic font and a foreign language creates two significant hurdles for the 21st century genealogist\, perhaps with limited foreign language skills\, to overcome. But don’t despair. Modern technology has provided solutions. Learn how to “crack the code” and discover where your favorite newspaper sites have hidden the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) text. Translation tools will quickly make those foreign words readable for even the most die-hard English-only speaker. Speaker: Mary Kircher Roddy\, CG. SUMMARY:Zigzagging Through German Church Records
DESCRIPTION:Researching German ancestors can feel like a daunting task\, but German church records can be a highly valuable resource to help you uncover hidden ancestors. Join us as we hear from James Beidler\, who will guide us through the most effective approach to using the baptismal\, confirmation\, marriage\, and burial records from German church registers. By using the different bits of information found in each register\, researchers can zigzag their way to adding centuries to a pedigree. His talk will be followed by a Q&A session. Registration. Beidler is known internationally as one of the top people in the field of German genealogy and has authored three books on German family history. He is a former board member of the IGGP. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nEastern Time Zone | online | English

SUMMARY:They Joined\, They Associated: Finding Records of Germanic Organizations and Other Collections
DESCRIPTION:*This is a partner event. Speaker: Paula Stuart-Warren\,  CG® FMGS\, FUGA. U. S. libraries\, historical societies\, archives\, and university library special collections sections hold the records from many organizations that our Germanic ancestors joined. The organization may have been a German heritage\, charitable\, religious\, resettlement\, political\, social\, or other organization. Additionally\, as our parts of our families migrated\, so did the records. Frequently genealogists think that there may be no records for some of the family. However\, there may be substantial information buried away in a manuscript collection. Finding these collections with e records of membership\, donations\, necrologies\, stories\, activities\, and more has become easier in recent years. Many finding aids online and off lead you to these research nuggets that represent hundreds of years of material. SUMMARY:Status in German Society 1500 to 1800: Where Did Your Ancestors Fit In?
DESCRIPTION:*This is a partner event. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Roger P. Minert. This presentation applies to all German states including Pomerania. Thanks to a great extent to the very well-developed and rather inflexible feudal system in Germanic territories in Europe\, our ancestors were quite stable in their social and economic status. The structure of classes (from the highest to the lowest) is described in this presentation\, with an emphasis on correctly placing our ancestors on that social scale continuum. Advantages and disadvantages for our ancestors are discussed\, as well as the advantages for modern historians searching for their ancestors in that world. Registration. \n\n\n\nEastern time zone | online | English
