SUMMARY:Steinstücken: A Little Pocket of Freedom
DESCRIPTION:With author Donald Smith. When the Cold War split the German capital of Berlin in half\, between East and West\, one neighborhood was trapped in the middle. Steinstücken was officially part of the American Sector in Berlin during the Cold War\, but it was completely surrounded by Soviet Zone territory. The Americans couldn’t even send soldiers or supplies to the village without risking a confrontation\, and possibly even combat\, with the Soviets and later the East Germans. Despite experiencing the Cold War confrontation right in the front and back yards\, the residents nonetheless managed to live relatively normal lives\, and built a bond with the Americans that stays strong to this day. Tickets. Fee charged. \n\n\n\n\n\nEastern time zone | hybrid | English

SUMMARY:A Quest for Relatives in Kazakhstan
DESCRIPTION:*This is a partner event. Treffen Tuesday with Michael Brown\, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wyoming and second-generation German Russian. Several years ago\, he discovered a village in northern Kazakhstan named Karamyshevka that was started in 1906 by Germans. Karamyshevka was also the Russian name of Bauer\, the village in the Volga region home to my German Russian relatives. I suspected residents of Karamyshevka in the Volga region started the village in Kazakhstan and wondered if my own relatives were involved. That’s how the adventure started. SUMMARY:Genealogical Research in the German-speaking World
DESCRIPTION:Do you know what your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather was doing in 1785? In the German-speaking area\, church records were introduced in the 15th century and established nationwide in the 16th century. Although some were lost over the centuries (many during the Thirty Years’ War)\, they are a marvelously comprehensive source for genealogical research. Based on these sources\, it is possible to trace family roots back over centuries! Speakers: Herbert and Till Fehmer\, father-and-son genealogical researchers. Registration. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | online | English
