SUMMARY:About Civil Marriage in Germany in 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:This is a partner event. In Germany\, there are two types of marriage – a civil ceremony performed at the registry office\, and a religious ceremony in the Catholic Church. This system has been in place for over 200 years on the western side of the Rhine River\, as a result of the occupation and annexation by French forces following their revolution. At that time\, it was decreed that a civil ceremony must always precede a religious wedding. On the other side of the Rhine\, the old system remained in place\, whereby Catholics could only marry in the church. Protestants never married in church\, as Martin Luther had declared that marriage was a secular matter. Among Protestants\, the couple entered into a formal contract\, which was then celebrated in church before the congregation. In his presentation on civil marriage in Germany\, Roland Geiger explores this topic in more detail\, using examples to illustrate the content of the contracts and marriage records\, and the information that can be gleaned from them. Registration. \n\n\n\n\n\nPacific time zone | online | English

SUMMARY:German (and French and Danish) Church Records Online: Documenting your ancestors before they immigrated to Russia
DESCRIPTION:This is a partner event. Speaker: Maggie Hein. You probably know where your ancestors settled in Russia and when they arrived there. What about where they lived before they moved to Russia? Have you wondered how to access records in Europe to research your ancestors? Church parish records are the main source for documentation of the births\, marriages\, and deaths of our ancestors. Many European archives have digitized their collections and made the images available online. Some of these websites are even free to use. This presentation will cover European websites including Matricula Online\, Archion\, Rigsarkivet\, and French Departmental Archives\, and American websites FamilySearch and Ancestry. Maggie Hein is one of the AHSGR Village Coordinators for the village of Frank. Her ongoing research project is to identify the German and French origin locations of settlers in Frank and Kolb\, and to publish the origin locations of settlers in other Volga German colonies whenever she happens to find them. Registration. \n\n\n\n\n\nCentral time zone | online | English

SUMMARY:Tracing Family Roots Through German Words

Attendees will also be introduced to the German “Fraktur” typeface and will be provided with helpful tips to aid their Germanic genealogical research. SUMMARY:German Genealogy on the Internet: Beyond the Basics
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Dr. Michael Lacopo. The Internet age has brought genealogy to our fingertips over the last three decades\, and we can find our German ancestors easier. But it still takes some digging and know-how to find our elusive Germans. This lecture will discuss some online sites that all German genealogists should know. American sites will be covered\, but a strong concentration on lesser-used German sites will be discussed\, as we are missing vital clues by not being truly “international” in our Internet research endeavors!
